This section is for reviews of theatre in Ireland (and, to a lesser extent, in the UK).  It is also a place where reviews of Irish TV and film can be placed.  However, in order to place a review you must first submit it by private message, with your name, to the Administrator.

All reviews should conform to the following criteria:

  • the review should focus on the craft and skill displayed (or absent) in the production.  It is not really the kind of review that would appear in the media, but is rather intended for the theatre-making or film-making community.  Therefore it possibly would have limited relevance to the wider public
  • Reviews should be articulate and aim to be engaging to read
  • Reviews should aim to show insight and / or elucidation regarding the production
  • It is not sufficient to say that something was good or bad - all judgements should be supported by detailed analysis and objective criticism.

Submit reviews to the Administrator.  They will be judged according to the criteria above and either accepted or sent back for editing/re-writing.

How do we go about inviting members to review our shows Peter - I'd love them to come and review Wonderland's shows for instance? We have Pagliacci the lunchtime opera on at the moment. I applaud the democracy of your new approach. Thanks Alice www.wonderlandtheatre.com

Hi Alice

anybody wishing to review a show by other members is especially encouraged to do so.  They simply see the notice about the show - in the News and Events section - and go review it.  Then they submit the review to me for posting.

Peter

i, a few months back saw the play 'saved' by edward bond. At the peacock. And as a LONDONER i sat their mystified at irish actors imitating the voices of my native city. Needless to say their voices lacked the necessary authenticity of that city. So therefore their characters were watered down and unfocused. The costumes in that production were a mish mush of different periods.ie mini skirts wernt in ,in the italian suit era.And unlike nowadays, people, if they wanted to go to a dance had to be able to dance. So they didnt just shake their rump. They jived or twisted. This production put me off ever seeing a london play in ireland again, unless its played by english actors...Or unless i know that the actors had employed a London voice coach.By the way this production won an award for best director....victor feldeman.

when will the irish theatre scene at the top end ie the abbey, gate and top groups invite actors/esses with a proven track record of being offered work in theatre, tv, radio etc get the chance to compete for parts with the selected few.In sport the best comes to the top. as you have to win. Arsen wenger scours the planet for the best talent for arsenal. He doesent like the theatre here just pick a few local high bury lads. So why shouldnt the arts council sponsored end of the theatre seek out new talent. I for one as an example ,have in the last year been in 5 professional shows including a 6 week nation wide tour, done the tudors, 2 shorts ( one for queens university) Read my own work on RTE ( That has been recorded twice) And am now due to be in an Opera....Thank god for The Actors' Forum! When will the cartel attitude be more fair to one and all.
