Crooked House is a registered company and a charity. We were established in Newbridge, County Kildare in 1993, making theatre with long-term unemployed adults in an education setting. We began working with teenagers in 1996 through a weekly drama programme. After COVID in 2021 we included all community groups and demographics in our programmes. We now work with a range of groups and communities on long-term collaborative theatre-making projects. These include International Protection Applicants, Women’s’ Sheds, migrants or all backgrounds, people with intellectual and physical disabilities, children, and the elderly and retired. We support and train 15 international theatre artists every year, 50% of whom are from outside the EU. As a registered charity we have a board of trustees. We operate comprehensive Child Protection policies, have Garda Clearance for all our volunteers, and have a Welfare Officer in place to guide the company’s work with the young people. It is funded by project-specific funding from the European Union, The Arts Council, and Kildare County Council. The HSE fund drama based mental health initiatives, and Kildare Wicklow ETB fund our leadership training work. Project funding is sought for once-off projects.
